ÉCORCHÉ: A CHARACTER STUDY

Photographed by Addison Liu.

Premiered in Harvard Ballet Company’s Illusions in Fall 2022.

Music: Excerpts from Chopin’s 24 Preludes

An écorché is a sketch of the human body without its overlying skin. Emerging from this Renaissance practice is the notion that to capture the form of the subject, the artist must look inward and past the illusive outer shell. “Écorché” explores how the dancers perform aspects of themselves in public spaces– such as through embodying femininity– as a means to construct this outer facade. The movement also considers how our performances embody larger oppressive systems. At the beginning of the rehearsal process, the dancers were asked to describe the characters they perform to seek acceptance. Each of their thoughtful answers was used to create the solos and various movement motifs.
